This week…

Maths:  We are looking at written methods for division this week (3 digit x 1 digit) and any multiplication revision will help!  This method will then need to be used for some problem solving work too.

English:  We are continuing with our fairy tale theme and the boys will be writing letters to their favourite characters this week and producing some work for displays.  In grammar we are looking at commas in lists.  This week’s spelling test will be on past tense.

Weekend homework

mary rose by Joshua Peter’s why did the mary rose sink The Mary Rose by Nicholas

Your homework this weekend is to research the theories as to why the Mary Rose sank. You are to be investigators! Decide which theory you think is most likely to be true, and write your report to persuade your readers that you are correct. Post your report as a comment here.

Here’s a link to the website we used in our lesson to get you started:

This week…

Maths:  My group are working on the written methods of multiplication (column multiplication) which can easily be forgotten!  Timestables (up to 10×10) are essential for this and for those who are able to progress further we will be looking at using these skills to solve word problems.

English:  We are continuing our unit on fairy tales and still looking at alternative points of view.  Our spelling focus this week is homophones and for grammar we are still trying to encourage the boys to reread and edit work ensuring the basic punctuation is included.

Plurals song

I know lots of you enjoyed the plurals song that we shared in spellings.  I wonder if any of you are able to compose your own songs to help people remember something?  It could be a spelling rule (there are hundreds to choose from!) or a way to remember the properties of shapes.  It could be about history, geography or anything that takes your fancy!  If you would like to video your compositions or just send me an audio I can share these at school.  🙂

Newspaper report homework help

Remember the purpose of your homework is to tell the reader about what happened and who it affected.  All of the facts are available on the PowerPoint below (this is the one we used in class this week) and you can include some of the details that you learned on the school trip last week.  If you want to type your newspaper report you can use one of the templates here (you can edit it too) to save you time!

HOMEWORK HELP!

If you are struggling to think about your success criteria for fairy tales then think of the following to help you:

Where are fairy stories normally set?

What type of characters are usually in these stories?

How do they usually begin?

What type of language is used?

Is there anything that isn’t really believable in these stories?

What tense is used?

This week…

Maths:  My maths set are continuing to work on time this week. This involves:

  • Telling time on analogue and digital clocks
  • 12 and 24 hour clocks
  • Reading timetables
  • Time problems

English:  We are starting a new topic this week on FAIRY TALES.  We will be looking at the features of these stories and also looking at alternative points of views.  This topic is more challenging than it seems!  It allows the boys to be really creative and involves some creative writing.

Our grammar work is looking once again at sentence punctuation and spellings this Friday will be looking at an assessment of all plurals work.
