William T:
When I arrived, they had already dressed some of the class in clothes like they would have had in Tudor times. I was surprised by the number of layers the clothes had. I don’t wear that many layers even when playing outside in the cold.
The shoes came in two parts. The first part was a leather shoe you put your foot in and the other was a wooden sole which was strapped over the leather shoe to stop it from getting dirty.
The teachers also passed some Tudor metal spoons and plates around the class. The metal wasn’t shiny like the cutlery we have at home but was fancier. We were told the metal was pewter which had lead in it which was poisonous enough to make you ill but probably not kill you.
Overall I enjoyed the lesson and learnt a lot but it would have been better if I could have been in all of it.
Tudor Workshop Thursday 24th November
On Thursday we had a visit from Catherine. She works at a history museum and came to tell us more about the Tudors. First she showed us some Tudor writing. Next Luca and Max dressed up as Tudor people. Luca had to wear a dress and a thing to make his bottom stick out! Max wore a boy outfit which was a short trousers and a waistcoat. When they were dressed we all had a look at Max and then they stood next to each other and the teachers took some photos.
After that Catherine showed us some Tudor artefacts which were shoes, jugs, plates, a spoon and a necklace. I liked one of the jugs best. It had a had a big hole in the top and a like sieve at the bottom. When you hold the top of it the water doesn’t fall out.
We asked some questions and Catherine asked us some questions too. I wanted to know how the water didn’t fall out of the strange jug. It was to do with the air pressure in the jug.
I enjoyed our visit from Catherine a lot.
