Homework

Homework: English

Write a persuasive letter on the topic of ‘recycling/littering/pollution’. You will need to choose an aspect of this subject that you feel strongly about. Think about who it is that you will need to write to: is it the local MP? The manager of a local supermarket? The manager of the local council? The Chairman of a soft drinks company? The headmaster? How will you explain your concerns and ideas? How will you persuade them to change their practices?

Support: Look on the BLOG for help in writing letters and persuasive arguments.

Hand in your first draft on Wednesday. You can hand write or type your work. You weekend homework will be to edit and improve then produce a final version of your letter.

This week…

Maths:  My maths set are continuing to work on measures for the first part of the week.  We are reading a range of scales, solving measures word problems and some boys will be looking at metric conversions too.

The second part of the week will move on to coordinates.

Literacy:  We are continuing to read Krindlekrax in class this week and exploring the theme of friendship.  The boys will be writing letters of advice.  In grammar they are looking at the more complex use for a comma in sentences and the spellings will look at the prefixes ‘im’, ‘in’ and ‘il’.

Paper books

Following a request from a student, I am putting the following instructions on here to show how to make a paper book.

  1. Use A3 paper

2. Fold in half

3. Fold in half again

4. Unfold once

5. Fold in half the other way then open up so the paper is only folder in half once (A4 sized)

With the fold facing down, cut to the centre crease

6. Open completely (revealing a slice through the middle)

7. Fold in half (width ways)

8. Place fingers on the left and right hand sides and push together

9. Fold the pages to create your book

This week…

Maths: This week we are working on solving puzzles using addition and subtraction strategies.  We will also be looking at starting our topic on measures this week too.  Below is a great link I shared with the boys today which helps develop rapid recall and general maths skills.  There are a variety of topics, levels and the boys can choose if they want to ‘beat the clock’ with the question too.

English:  We begin our new class reader ‘Krindlekrax’ this week.  The boys will be exploring the themes in the book and looking at the characters that we are initially introduced to.  Spellings will focus on the ‘shun’ sound as a suffix.
