This week…

English:  This week the boys are writing an extended piece of writing from the point of one of the main characters in our class reader.  They will have to imagine what it must be like living in a giant world.  We will be using this piece of writing to assess knowledge of punctuating speech and use apostrophes correctly, using similes and metaphors and using emotive language.  Spellings this week will be looking at the past tense (adding ‘ed’).

Maths:  My maths set will be looking at perimeter and area this week.  Our warm ups for each session will focus on previous objectives (as a revision) such as rounding numbers to 100, adding 3 fractions with a common denominator and matching fractions to their equivalent decimals.

Imagine you are the leader of a wandering tribe and you have arrived in a new land where you would like to settle. new place blog task

Your task is to choose where you would like to settle and to convince the other members of the tribe that your choice is a good one.  Think about the advantages of your choice and the disadvantages of the alternative places.  Think about how the Aztec leaders persuaded their tribes.  Be creative!

Leave your work as a comment below.

I’m going to convince my tribe to live near the lake as we will have a nice place to live. The river next to us is a good place to wash and we can burn water to make salt. At the other side of us there is a wood so we can cut down the trees and can make them into all sorts of gadgets. Another problem is food and water which will be no problem as we can kill the animals in the forest and eat them and get water from a near by oasis that I’ve already found. One of the key problems is protection which by the water we sadly don’t have but that will easily be solved with our amazing fighting skills. The forest and mountains are both terrible places to live. There is a live volcano that will kill us and the rest of the tribe if it erupts. Living by the river is also good because we won’t be bored as we can make sandcastles! The most obvious reason is what happened yesterday, we saw a snake on a tree eating its own tail, we are destined to live here.

This week…

Maths: We are looking at changing fractions to decimals and vice versa this week.  We will be using the following link to help support this unit: http://www.taw.org.uk/lic/itp/mov_digits.html

In addition to this we will be recapping all aspects of fractions so far as well as adding decimal numbers.  The boys are working hard on their mental maths skills and below are links to some additional work:

English:

We are working on some comprehension work this week which links in to PSHE work on perseverance and positive mind sets.   Our creative writing this week will allow the boys to demonstrate their learning and understanding of all the grammar work that we have covered so far this year.  Within our grammar lesson we are continuing to look at punctuating speech as this is an area that needs further development.  Spellings for this week are looking at the prefixes ‘sub’ and ‘re’.

This week…

Maths:

This week we are looking at adding fractions with a common denominator and then moving on to simplifying fractions.  Multiplication knowledge is essential for this topic and the below link may well help.

English:  we are continuing work using our class reader this week and the boys will be imagining a conversation between two characters from the book. This will link in with our grammar work on punctuating speech.  Finally, our spellings this week will be looking at the prefixes ‘sub’ and ‘inter’.

This week…

Maths:  we are revising the rules for rounding numbers this week and we will be looking at rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.  The numbers we will look at will vary and even include some decimals too.

English:  We are starting our unit of work based on our class reader.  This week the boys will be imaging what it must have been like for Omri when he discovered the magic of the cupboard and writing a diary entry as Omri himself.  Grammar lessons will be spent studying main and subordinate clauses and the spellings this week will be the prefixes ‘anti’ and ‘inter’.
