Facts about the Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone was named after a village called Rosetta.

The Rosetta Stone has the first three languages carved in the stone and then when English captured it they inscribed the fourth.

The Rosetta Stone was unread for 2,000 years before scholars started to working on it, trying to understand what is written on it.

The Rosetta Stone was moved from a temple at Sais.

The Rosetta Stone has 3 versions of degree (law order) for the orphaned king Ptolemy the 5th who became king at the age of 6. His name is repeatedly mentioned on the stone. The Rosetta Stone was inscribed on the anniversary of his coronation.

The stone was the key of unlocking the understanding of hieroglyphics.

On the last line of hieroglyphic text on the stone three signs spell out “stone slab” in Egyptian “ahaj” fourth sign is a picture of the stone itself, as it would have originally looked: a square slab with a rounded top. Sound and picture work together in the text.

On the stone the hieroglyphics record the sound of the Ancient Egyptian language.

From then on the world could understand the ancient Egyptian civilisation by putting words to the great objects: the statutes, the monuments, the mummies and the papyri.

Maths:  My group are exploring symmetry this week.  We will look at identifying symmetry around us, in shapes (regular and irregular) and then look at drawing reflective symmetry in horizontal and vertical axes.  As an extension we will also look at diagonal axes too.

English: We will be creating out entries for the Haileybury Writing Competition and looking at how to draft and edit work.

Half term homework

Haileybury Competition:

The power point is attached here for inspiration!  Remember you are just getting your ideas together and MUST NOT write the entry.  You could gather together pictures and create a word bank (maybe using the theme of deserted theaters) or prepare a story plan.  Be creative!

You can leave your homework as a review here or if you are trying something more creative you can e-mail it to me or bring it in on a memory stick.

Bishop Stortford College science trip

We travelled by coach to the college, when we arrived we were told to not to talk until we got to the science department because the students were taking exams. We then arrived in the science department, hung our Blazers up and put our lunch bags down. A lady explained all the rules and told us not to mess about.

They split the class into two, and then we had to do as many activities as we could.  The first experiment I did was a lager version of a a toy that I use have at home where there are 5 steel balls and when you swing one ball at one end it hits the balls and then bounces the ball at the other end. They had huge one with bowling balls!

Then was also this big bowl full of water, I had to wet my hands and then rub the handles on the bowl to make the water jump.

At the end we had our lunch and then got on the coach back to school. I had lots of fun at the college and recommend other schools do this on their school trip.

A Review Of The  Science Trip by Peter

The science trip we went to was really interesting! The college we went was called Bishop Stortford and it went up to 16. We got into a long room and it was packed full of things that I never even knew was real! Then we got told to investigate all the objects for 1 hour. After we look we have to do a small test including all the objects in the room.

It was so crazy that they even had their own Tardis. When you got inside it there were loads of mirrors. Everywhere I looked there were LOADS of me.

My favourite object was one of the illusions. The illusion was just a grid and some white dots on each corner and when you first look at the dots they are black! Quickly they go back to white. You cant look at a dot and wait for it to turn black because only at first look its black.

Another object that was actually quiet creepy was special paper with holes in. The task said next to it: press the button and then look at it right in the middle for 15 seconds. Then look at the palm of your hand. When I looked at it for 15 seconds I stopped then looked at my hand. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! I saw the palm of my hand spinning round and round. I was bursting to ask a truck full of questions but then I had to do the test. The test was quite easy because you had all the answers around you. After the test we all had lunch.

Overall I really enjoyed the trip and I would love to go back again
