Maths so far…

My maths group had a revision session on all of the topics covered so far this half term.  They all went away knowing which areas they may want to revise again in the half term on Mathletics.  Below is a list of topics to help you:

  • Reading and writing big numbers
  • The value of digits in numbers
  • Column addition
  • Column subtraction
  • Multiplying/dividing numbers by 10 and 100
  • Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100
  • Counting on and back with negative numbers

Photo competition

The deadline for entries for Mrs Craig’s competition is tomorrow.  Sadly no one from year 4 has entered yet and it would be lovely if some of you got creative this evening or even tomorrow after school and could send her a picture.

This week…

Numeracy: This week my maths group will be having a round up of all of the topics we have covered so far this term including: reading large numbers, column addition and subtraction, multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 100 and rounding.  We will also be looking at negative numbers this week.

Literacy:  We begin our topic on FAIRY TALES this week and we will be looking at the features and alternative points of view.  We will continue with handwriting too and our grammar work  continues to look at synonyms and using these words appropriately in context.

This week…

(Apologies, this should have published yesterday but it didn’t go through.)

Maths:  My maths group are looking at rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 and learning about where this would be useful (for example when adding or subtracting numbers mentally).  The game below is something we are looking at in class later in the week.

Literacy:  The boys will be handing in their class reader this week and we will be starting the next unit of Fairy Tales.  This is a fantastic unit which I know the boys will love as we explore alternative points of view so perhaps having a quick recap on some traditional stories may be helpful.

We are exploring synonyms in our grammar lessons this week which will help develop creative writing and extend the children’s vocabulary too.

This week…

Maths:  We are looking at multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 this week.  We will begin with whole numbers and then look at decimals too.  Click on the link below for a game of bingo to help you learn:

English:  We are looking at how to write a really effective book review this week.  This will link into homework later on in the week where the boys will be writing a book review for our class reader.  We are continuing to work on effective adjectives too and the handwriting letter for this week is the letter ‘o’.

SPELLING RULES

Here is the powerpoint we have used in some of our recent spelling lessons to help us learn about all of the rules for writing plurals.  Learn the rules to help you with your spelling test next week and so you are able to write plurals correctly in all of your work.
